A loan of $650 helped a member to purchase hybrid seed and fertilizer for the cultivation of maize and sorghum.

Makadara A Group's story

Lydiah’s group has 11 farmers and is located in Bungoma South District. Lydiah is pictured on the right of Makadara A Group with her hand raised. Lydiah is shown with the 4 men and 7 women of her group. Her loan amount will enable her to plant half an acre with sorghum and maize. Lydiah first enrolled with One Acre Fund during the 2012 Long Rains, and is now preparing to be a One Acre Fund farmer during the 2013 Long Rains season. Lydiah joined One Acre Fund to get access to hybrid seed and fertilizer, and also to improve her farming techniques with One Acre Fund methods.

Before joining One Acre Fund, Lydiah could only harvest 1.5 bags of maize per half acre, but now she is able to harvest 3.5 bags! She plans to use future profits from the harvest to send her children to school, and save for the future. During the 2013 Long Rains season, each group member will receive half an acre of agricultural inputs (such as seed and fertilizer) on credit. Lydiah’s group will receive 5.5 acres worth of inputs on credit in total.

Please note: Catherine, a member of Samoya Bidii Group, is also pictured above. However, her husband has already appeared on Kiva and she shares her OAF membership with him. In order to prevent the double funding of a farmer, she is pictured as a member of the group, but will not be receiving funding from this loan.

In this group: Alima, Asmin, Dickson, Lydia, Eugila, Razia, Rukia, Lawrence, Juma, Asman
