Fighting for a better future? We need your help.

Creating a more equitable world takes a lot of time and energy, but at Kiva we’re in it for the long haul. 100% of money lent on Kiva goes to funding loans. That means we rely on donations from people like you to make this work possible. For a limited time, if you donate $35 or more, a $25 bonus will be added to your account (you’ll get an email once it’s there).

Mariam's story

Mariam lives in Mariakani area of Coast Province, Kenya. She is a married mother of six children and runs a grocery stall, a business which she has been running for three years. She obtained the start-up capital from the casual labour she performed on other people's farms. Mariam also sells fish.

She learnt about Milango through friends who invited her to the group and she joined with the aim of accessing credit to improve her business operations. Her main challenge is bad debts. Mariam is applying for a loan of 21,050 Kenya shillings to buy grocery stock, e.g., tomatoes, onions, potatoes, kale, fish etc. The extra income from the loan will be added to her savings to improve the living standard of her family.
