A loan of $625 helped to buy beer at wholesale for her business.

Margelis's story

Margelis is 44 years old and works selling soft drinks and beer both wholesale and retail in the community where she lives, located to the south west of Barranquilla. During the last four years, she has managed build up a customer base and now she is very well-known. For this reason, she needs to be able to have a permanent inventory to be able to respond to the market effectively. Starting the business was her husband’s idea, because they needed to generate a new source of income to be more comfortable at home. He saw that there was no one selling beer in their area, and people walked for a long way to get it. That’s why they decided to start the business to respond to the needs of their neighbors.

She is currently requesting a Kiva loan, which is her first loan from Fundación Mario Santo Domingo, with which she will buy beer at wholesale. The carnival season is coming up and, prior to this, every weekend there are many fancy dress parties and festivals of light which increase customers’ consumption. Her working day is from 12 p.m. to 12 a.m. Her goal is to become the supplier of all the businesses near to her area in order to generate more income and give her children a better education, so that they grow to become good citizens.
