Abu Bakarr's Group's story

Pictured here are teachers from one of the primary schools in Lunsar, a town in northern Sierra Leone. This group of teachers has come to SMT, a partner of Kiva based in Makeni, in northern Sierra Leone for a loan of 10,400,000 Leones for the entire group. With the help of this loan, these teachers will be able to buy or invest in things that their mere salaries will not allow for. At the end of each month, they will repay the loan using their monthly salaries. It is their school’s bursar who is directly responsible for doing the repayments on their behalf.

Abu Bakarr is the featured leader of this group. Abu Bakar is 50 year old. A native of Lunsar, he is a widower with three children – one in primary school, one in college, and the other is not yet of school-going age. Abu Bakarr has been a teacher for many years. He is the current head teacher at the school. Abu Bakarr has requested for this loan in order to pay tuition fees for his children.
