A loan of $600 helped a member to buy palm oil, beans and charcoal in large quantity, to add to her current stock.

Unity Group's story

Meet the members of the Unity Group from Lunsar, a town in northern Sierra Leone. They are all local entrepreneurs who have come to SMT, a partner of Kiva, to apply for a loan of SLL 500,000 for each person. With the help of this loan, they will be able to expand their businesses, make more sales, and consequently improve their living conditions.

Melrose is the leader of this group. Melrose is married, and the couple has two children, who are attending primary and secondary schools. Melrose sells palm oil (the country's most popular cooking oil), beans and charcoal. She has been doing business for seven years. With the help of this loan, Melrose is going to buy the above-mentioned items in large quantity, to add to her current stock.
