A loan of $3,000 helped a member to buy an over machine for her sewing business.

Hevar's Group's story

Hevar is the leader of Hevar's Group. Hevar is a young, Iraqi woman. She is 21 years old, married, and a mother of one child. With limited career options, due to cultural restrictions and domestic constraints, Hevar is one of the many Iraqi women who are working from home, using her sewing skills to generate some income and participate in meeting the financial needs of her family.

Hevar has two years' experience with the small, home-based, sewing business activity which she hopes to improve, to increase her ability to offer more choices for her customers. She has many creative ideas for working on her orders of dresses and other small, fabric, household items. To be able to implement more of these ideas, she would like to buy an over machine. A small portion of the group's loan will allow Hevar to make the purchase.

Relief International - Microfinance Iraq offers "Group loans" for clients unable to provide a guarantor and, therefore, unable to apply for a loan as an individual. As a group, the members collectively guarantee the loan. Groups consist of three to five clients and each client is evaluated on his or her repayment capacity. All group members receive the same loan amount as the individual with the lowest repayment capacity in the group.
