A loan of $2,700 helped a member to renew her work area and create a better work environment for her sewing work.

Chnwr's Group's story

Chnwr is a 32 years old Iraqi woman. She is married and a mother of two children.

She now has 5 years experience with the small home-based sewing and tailoring business activity. She successfully repaid her previous Kiva loan which she used to buy an oversewing machine to be able to provide more variety in the services she can provide to her customers. She would now like to concentrate on improving her own work conditions, making her work hours more pleasant.

Relief International - Microfinance Iraq offers "Group loans" for clients unable to provide a guarantor - thereby unable to apply for a loan as an individual. As a group, the members collectively guarantee the loan. Groups consist of 3 to 5 clients and each client is evaluated on his or her repayment capacity. All group members receive the same loan amount as the individual with the lowest repayment capacity in the group.

Based on the political and social challenges of lending in Iraq, personally identifiable information about this borrower has been altered for their protection. RI-Iraq appreciates Kiva lenders' consideration of these challenges and encourages lenders to continue their support for Iraqi borrowers.
