In 2012, Maa Laxmi Naryani SHG was formed with 12 women from a small village in Odisha. Banita is selected as the leader of the group. The lady who is sitting in the second position from the left side of the photograph is Banita.

With the initiative of Banita they are doing monthly saving and solving their problem among the group. They are also taking part in the village decision-making meeting.

Banita is a 30-year-old lady living with her one daughter, one son and her husband. Her husband is involved in agriculture activities. He has nine years of experience in this activity. Because of the growing price of fertilizers and pesticides, they are unable to use fertilizers and pesticides as per the requirement and they are not able to pay the labour charges also. So Banita has applied for a loan to purchase fertilizers and pesticides and to pay the labor charges.

Banita says that this loan can help her to increase her family income and she can provide study materials according to the needs of her children.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
