A loan of $1,025 helped to buy chickens, chicken medicines and feed.

Rosa Mercedes's story

The "30 de Agosto" Community Bank meets in the parish of Picoaza in the city of Portoviejo. This region is known for being a very commercial area, for its traditional feasts of San Pedro and San Pablo, and for the warmth of its people.

Señora Rosa lives here. She is 34 years old and has a partner with whom she has three children aged 17, 12 and 7. Two of them study at high school and the youngest studies at primary school. Her partner works as a construction assistant.

Twelve years ago, when Rosa saw that her partner did not earn very much and that his job was unstable, she asked him to build her a small shed, in which she started raising chickens. Over time, she has increased the size of her farm and currently has up to 400 chickens per season. The season lasts around two months, after which the chickens are ready to sell. She sells them to traders, who then take them to their businesses in various markets in the city.

She will use this new loan to buy chickens, chicken medicines and feed so that they develop properly. She has been a member of the community bank for over a year, and she likes it because of the help it provides through loans.

Her dream is to do the very best she can for her children.
