A loan of $2,400 helped a member to improve her work conditions and renew her work area.

Zhoan's Group's story

Zhoan and her group are a laughing little bunch who had a hard time standing still for a picture.

Zhoan is a 23-year-old young Iraqi woman. She is single, and lives with her family. With limited career options due to cultural restrictions and domestic constraints, Zhoan is one of the many Iraqi woman who is working from home, using her sewing skills to generate some income and participate in meeting the financial needs of her family.

Zhoan has four years of experience with her small, home-based sewing and tailoring business, making custom-order dresses and other small fabric household items for her customers. She would like to improve her working conditions, and renew her work area. A small portion of the group's loan will allow her to pay for the renovation and improvements.

Relief International - Microfinance Iraq offers "Group loans" for clients unable to provide a guarantor - thereby unable to apply for a loan as an individual. As a group, the members collectively guarantee the loan. Groups consist of 3 to 5 clients, and each client is evaluated on his or her repayment capacity. All group members receive the same loan amount as the individual with the lowest repayment capacity in the group.
