A loan of $1,100 helped to buy wool and sewing materials.

Mercedes Monserrate's story

The communal bank "San Pedro De Pueblo" meets every 15 days in the Pueblo Nuevo parish of the Santa Ana canton. It is a place of beautiful country landscapes and kind, honest people devoted to farm work and ranching.

Mercedes lives here. She is 77 years old. Several years ago, her husband passed away, but from that relationship she had 8 children who are now independent adults. A child whom she is raising now lives with her who's 8 years old and is attending school.

Several years ago, Mercedes learned dressmaking in an academy of her locality. After the death of her husband, she works as seamstress. She makes clothing for ladies and children, but what she makes the most are handbags and purses of knitted wool. Wherever she makes these products, once they are made, she delivers them to certain bazaars in Santa Ana and Portoviejo. She has been doing this for more than 40 years and it allows her to go on without depending upon her children.

This loan is to buy wools to make handbags with and sewing materials. She is in her 7th loan cycle with the communal bank and she likes it because of the help that the loans provide her.

Her dreams are to be of good health and provide the best for her little one.
