Salimata's story

Salimata is a 38-year-old married mother of six children. She lives in her husband's polygamous household in the city of Koutiala (in the Sikasso region).
She did not have the chance to attend school, which is why she became involved in income-generating activities with her mother from an early age. After having run several activities, she decided on running a catering business several years ago. A very enterprising woman, she is very well known in her area, and her reputation is good, since she receives many customers each day. To satisfy her clientele and expand the size of her business, she decided to join the microfinance institution Soro Yiriwaso over five years ago. She is on her sixth individual loan. With this financial support, Salimata intends to buy bags of beans, rice, and oil to stock in order to make fritters. She gets her supplies from the merchants at the grand market in Koutiala and makes her food sales in cash in front of her house in Koutiala to a diverse clientele. She hopes to realize an average profit of 50,000 FCFA per month, which will be used to pay the interest on her loan and invest in her business.
