This will be Theara’s first time requesting a loan via VisionFund (Kiva’s partner). Theara is now leading a loan group of two female members to take out a loan in the amount of 160,000 KHR (Cambodian riels) each. As a group representative, Theara will spend her portion on building a proper latrine for use in the family. After receiving and using the loan as she plans, Theara believes that she will be able to create a healthy environment for her family as well as help to promote hygiene and sanitation in her community.
More information about this loan
This loan is part of VisionFund Cambodia’s initiative to expand access to clean water and/or sanitation to poor rural households.
Water filter loans provide poor households with clean, safe drinking water without requiring it to be boiled over wood fires. This protects borrowers’ health and Cambodia’s precious forests. Today, many rural Cambodians depend on rainwater, boreholes and surface water -- none of which are regarded as safe sources of fresh water. Walter filters provide a safer, easier and more economic alternative. VisionFund Cambodia is partnering with Hydrologic Social Enterprise to get water filters to families who need them most.
Latrine loans help households build standard, housed latrines for improved sanitation. In rural Cambodia, sanitation poses a major challenge for those who cannot afford to construct a household latrine. Every year, thousands of children die and many others fail to thrive due to dehydration, poor immunity and malnutrition caused by diarrhea and poor sanitation. VisionFund Cambodia is offering credit to change this picture.
About VisionFund CambodiaVisionFund Cambodia is a Christian organization and microfinance institution that provides small loans and other financial services to improve the lives of children, empower poor women and their families, and grow successful businesses. The organization works primarily in rural parts of Cambodia and has distinguished itself by targeting the very poor who require smaller loan sizes, regardless of religious beliefs, gender or ethnic background.
Kiva lenders’ funds will help the organization to expand into the northeastern provinces of the country, which have historically been underserved and difficult to reach with financial services.
This is a Group Loan
In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.
Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
About Housing Loans
Many poor families cannot afford housing that meets their needs. When you make a housing loan on Kiva, you give people access to flexible capital to obtain or improve their homes. Better housing means better health, sanitation, and even educational outcomes for children. A house can also be much more for entrepreneurs who run businesses out of their homes. In this way, housing and small business loans on Kiva share a common purpose: to alleviate poverty and enable families to enjoy more stable lives.
