A loan of $550 helped to buy a sewing machine.

Libia Lourdes's story

Libia has been a part of the “Mujeres de Chilcatotoras” communal bank for three years. She is a hardworking woman who likes the communal bank because of the great camaraderie that exists within the group. She lives in the Chilcatotoras sector, which is part of the Tarqui parish in Cuenca. This parish is known for its green pastures and inspirational landscapes. Its people maintain the cultures and traditions of their villages and raise livestock and farm.

Libia is 32 years old and the single mother of two children, ages 8 and 4. Her oldest son attends a local school and her youngest attends kindergarten. She lives at her grandparents’ house since she doesn’t have a home of her own. She lives with her grandparents and keeps them company and helps them with the household expenses.

Libia works from her home and embroiders skirts, bags, blouses, scarves (all typical regional clothing); she knits sweaters and scarves and learned all of this by watching other people and through trial and error. She also raises Guinea pigs, chickens, pigs, and raises crops but only for personal consumption.

She will use this loan to buy a sewing machine so that she can continue growing her small workshop.

Her dream is to have a workshop with employees.
