Alix Maria's story

Alix is 37 years old. She makes a living through the production of women’s purses and linen items in general in a workshop situated in her own home. She lives there with her partner and their three children of 4 to 16 years of age. She has worked for five years at her business, which she began when, obeying her own inclination, she decided to learn the techniques used to create women’s purses, men’s bags, and articles of linen for the home. With this business, she will be able to pay the household expenses, especially considering her children’s education, to which she plans to add increasing quality.

Her main customers are the community of the church which she attends, neighbors, friends, and referred customers to whom she sells for cash and credit. She purchases her raw materials and supplies weekly and just as often makes her sales. Her future goal is to have a greater infrastructure of machinery and to increase her market of institutional customers.

Currently, she is applying for a Kiva loan, the first financing made through Fundación Mario Santo Domingo. With the loan, she will buy accessories and such for leather, as well as cloth, with which she will produce kitchen articles, purses, and bags in the frame of the requests that her customers have made and thus assure the success of this investment through Kiva.
