María Mercedes's story

María has been a member of the communal bank Vegaspamba for 5 years. She is a woman who seeks her family's well being every day. She lives in a well known area of the Jadan parish in Cuenca, a place surrounded by natural beauty. Its people works in artisanal crafts and they make rope. They also work in farming and raising animals.

María is 51 years old. She is a single mother of 7 children. One son is married and lives on his own. Five of her children work and help her financially, and one of them goes to the local high school. The house where she lives is the fruit of her labors.

María works as a farmer. Her harvest is for household consumption and if any is left over she sells it. She also raises and sells guinea pigs and chickens. She makes rope, since that is a family tradition.

She is going to invest her new loan in buying feed for her animals as well as string to make rope with. Her goal is to have more animals to raise.
