A loan of $800 helped to hire laborers.

Joel's story

Joel is a 23-year-old single man who has a great deal of discipline and a good work ethic. He has taken on the responsibility of supporting his elderly parents. He lives in an adobe home that his parents have passed on to him. Upon finishing school, his father became quite ill, and for this reason Joel was not able to pursue a university education. Nevertheless, having worked hard in the fields since he was very young, he decided to work independently in order to support his family economically. He currently works in his parents' fields growing organic cacao. He feels this is very promising as this crop is highly profitable. In his work he relies on the support of day laborers who work on different tasks, such as pulling weeds, grafting plants, and applying compost. He also has a plan to test grow achiote plants on suitable land. He wishes to get married and open a business selling juices and soft drinks in parallel with his farming activities so that he can achieve solid income to support his family economically. He currently needs 2,000 nuevos soles in order to hire day laborers to pull weeds and apply compost to his crops.
