A loan of $250 helped to purchase more coconut leaves and threads to sell as roofing materials.

Pauline's story

Pauline is a married businesswoman who lives in Kilifi and sells roofing materials, commonly referred to as ‘makuti.’ They are made from coconut leaves. These items are preferred for roofing in the Kilifi area, and at the coast in general, since they insulate the heat, mostly experienced at the coast during the daytime. She has been running the business for eighteen years. She is married and has eight children. Pauline was introduced to Milango Financial Services by her friends and is applying for a loan of KES 21,100 (Kenya shillings) to purchase more coconut leaves and threads. Her main challenges are high inflation, which has reduced the purchasing power of most customers, a lack of reliable customers, and the fluctuating demand for the roofing materials. Pauline will save the additional income from this loan and use it to provide for her family.
