Edwin Javier's story

Edwin is 28 years old and grew up in a family with limited resources but which nonetheless supported him to finish primary school. He worked from an early age helping his parents.

Today Edwin is married to Shirley, who is 33 years old and works as a secretary in a photo printing office. Together they have one son who is still very young and whom they hope to be able to support in his education until he becomes a professional.

Edwin and his family live in the parish of Bomobolí of Santo Domingo, which is the capital city of the province of Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas. This province has in recent years experienced a high level of sustained growth. The most attractive and striking aspects of the capital city are its delicious fruits and gastronomy. It is also a considerable commercial center since it became a land port for commercial trade between the Sierra and Costa regions of the country. Santo Domingo also has many tourist attractions that, accompanied by its warm climate, are very popular with both national and international tourists. It is for this reason that the majority of the city’s inhabitants have taken up some commercial activity or service directed at the city’s inhabitants and tourists.

Edwin goes all over the city, and at times its outskirts, in his taxi, which he acquired with a lot of effort two years ago. With the support of his parents, who also are part of a taxi company, Edwin took up this difficult and tiring work in which he works 14 hours a day without a fixed schedule and is exposed to the dangers of the crime that has grown in the region.

It is very important for Edwin that his car have all of its spare parts and repairs in order so that he can provide his customers security and comfort when they use his service. It is for this reason that he went to Fundación Alternativa so that through Kiva they could help him finance various spare parts and repairs that his car needs.

Edwin’s taxi is his family’s daily means of support. He dreams of one day being able to have his own home and to see his son become a distinguished professional. He believes these are goals he will achieve with hard work and effort, even sacrificing time with his family, since the work of a taxi driver requires extended shifts during the night and early morning.
