A loan of $550 helped to buy reeds.

María Delia's story

María is a fighting member that is always looking to move forward. This is her fourth loan with the communal bank Las Gaviotas [The Seagulls]. She lives in the surrounding area of the Baños parish, which is eight kilometers west of Cuenca, or about fifteen minutes from the historic center of the city. The healing properties of the thermal springs that come from the adjacent mountains made Baños a prosperous center of tourism. Furthermore, there is great food and various places to enjoy nature. The people are kind and warm-hearted, and still maintain the culture and traditions of their villages.

She is forty years old, is married, and in her marriage, has conceived four children. Three of her children work and help her economically. Her single (unmarried) son studies at a high school in the city. Her husband works in construction as a bricklayer. They do not have their own house so they lease their home.

María spends time in the house taking care of her home, but the greater part of her time is dedicated to weaving and selling baskets. She learned this trade when she was very young from the example of her parents. In this way, she contributes to the economy of her home.

Her new loan is to buy reeds for the production of her baskets.

Her goal is to have her own house.
