Las Cuencanitas (Cuenca) Group's story

The Las Cuencanitas communal bank is made up of eight women and one man who live in different parts of the city of Cuenca, but their goals of succeeding in their businesses and getting their families ahead unite them. All of the group’s members are positive, happy and hardworking people. Cuenca is a city of great natural an architectural beauty. It was named as a World Heritage Site in 1999. Its people maintain their culture and traditions.

Jessica is one of the members and is very young, 19. She lives in a common law marriage and has an 8 month old son. Her husband owns a stucco factory (makes ceilings). They live in a rented home.

Jessica sells toys and works every day without a fixed schedule. She’s been doing this for three years and helps her husband in his shop when she’s not selling. She will use the money from this loan to buy toys.

She wants to open a restaurant, since she enjoys cooking.

The man on the far left of the image is not part of the group, but is the husband of one of the members.
