A loan of $650 helped to stock her store.

Mayerlis's story

Mayerlis, at age 25, has a small store where she sells student supplies, such as desk supplies, and various other items. She stocks her business based on the season and demand. She is the mother of a four year old girl and lives with her husband in the south part of the city, where her shop has been located for three years.

Her mother encouraged her to start this business and she is her greatest example for her daily tasks, which she does for eight hours a day, seven days a week, generating income that supports and benefits her home. She sells for cash and credit and works especially on orders from her customers. In seasons like Christmas and New Year, her shop is decorated with things that attract families, but it’s also when she has a great challenge, due to her shortage of working capital that does not allow her to respond to her customer demand during the season.

She is asking for a Kiva loan which she will use to buy merchandise in volume. She will fill her customers’ requests in part with colognes, creams, personal items, clothing, etc. Her Kiva loan is expected to be a success because she can buy the things that people are asking for and this is what she likes. With money in hand, she can find better deals and attract more customers. Her goal is to acquire a house in the future. Her greatest challenge is not having enough savings.
