A loan of $600 helped a member to pay for harvesting fees and buy fertilizer.

Lem's Group's story

Lem, a local farmer from Moung Russey district of Battambang Province, is 54 years old and has nine children. Three children who are still in school are dependent on her. Lem has one and a half hectares of farmland for growing paddy rice and one hectare for growing beans. To supplement the family’s income, her husband also works for others for a fee, besides helping on her farm. She has engaged in this business for ten years and is able to earn up to 26,000 KHR per day. This is not Lem's first loan, as she has been with VisionFund, Kiva’s partner for two earlier loan cycles. After successfully paying back her last loan, she feels empowered to sustain a good standard of living for her family. Now she is the leader of a group of two. Both of them are in the same cycle and requesting the same loan amount of 1,200,000 KHR each. Lem’s portion is going to spend part of her portion on harvesting fees and another part to buy fertilizer, seed, and insecticide. She expects to receive a good yield so that she can earn more income to maintain her good living conditions.
