Idalba Pederosa's story

In the community of Nueva California in the city of Portoviejo, capital of Manabí--which has been known for many years as the city of real tamarinds--the members of the communal bank "La California" meet every two weeks.

Ms. Idalba, who is 50 years old, is married and has a 12 year-old daughter who studies at a local high school. Her husband is a merchant.

Ms. Idalba has a grocery shop in her home. She likes to have a little of everything at her shop, where she sells groceries, meats, vegetables, medicines, and miscellaneous items. For extra money, she also sells a well-known brand of ice cream and telephone calling cards. Whenever she can, she improves her business thanks to the loans she has received from this institution. Ms. Idalba works with the help of her husband when he is able. She has had her business for 15 years, and it is through this that she will help her family get ahead.

Ms. Idalba will use this loan to stock her shop with products such as: rice, sugar, detergent, oil, canned goods, etc. She has been with the communal bank almost from the beginning, and she likes it because she can use the loan money to improve her business.

Her goal is to have a much larger shop.
