A loan of $1,150 helped to expand her business and to attract more customers by purchasing a variety of new drinks for re-sale.

Ruth's story

Ruth is now 30 years old and lives in the town of Wobulenzi in the Luwero region of Uganda. She is married and has two children, both of whom are currently in school.

For the past three years, Ruth has been working hard to manage her bar/lodge, where she sells drinks such as spirits, wine, and beer.

To help expand her business, Ruth has requested a loan in the amount of 3,000,000 UGX from BRAC Uganda. The loan proceeds will be used to purchase a variety of new drinks, which she expects will attract new customers and will help Ruth generate more profits to pay school fees for her children. In the future, Ruth hopes to be able to expand her business into another town.

Ruth is a member of BRAC's Small Enterprise Program (SEP). The program primarily serves small entrepreneurs like Ruth who do not have enough collateral for commercial loans, but who have businesses that have grown too large for microloans.
