Fortunata, 31, is married to Nilo; they have two children, Noralei, 16 and Jair, 10. This family lives in their own house located in a rural district in the central jungle. For about 10 years Fortunata has been working in agriculture growing mainly coffee and citrus fruit. With savings earned from this she opened another business at home. “This activity is more relaxed and is also profitable, especially the sale of beverages,” she mentions. Her house has the only telephone in the zone. “I’m happy with my accomplishments because I accomplished all of them through my own sweat and effort,” she explains.

She’s been working like this for five years. Now, she wants to put even more effort into it because her daughter has started university. The Christmas season is very profitable according to her calculations so she needs help to acquire more merchandise. This will be her 11th MFP loan so she commits to make her payments punctually. She enjoys the work in her “Luz del Futuro” (Light of the Future) communal bank because of its friendly family atmosphere. She will use the 500 soles to buy basic staples as well as soft-drinks and beer to sell in her home-based grocery store.
