Martha Eugenia's story

Martha is 54 years old and has a small store in the south-west of the city where she lives with her family. She is married and has two adult children. Martha first started gaining business experience 20 years ago as her parents bought and sold products and she learned the trade by watching them. When she got married she started selling products herself in order to make income for her household whilst, at the same time, being able to keep a close eye on her family. Martha currently works in her store from Monday to Sunday, from 8.00am to 6.00pm. She sells for cash to customers who she has managed to attract with personal selling strategies that she has learned throughout her business life. In her business, Martha sells ladies' clothing, footwear and soft drinks. She has a special location in her own home where she makes her sales. Martha is currently applying for a Kiva loan (her third loan from Fundación Mario Santo Domingo) which she will use to buy perfumes, footwear and clothing as she would like to please those customers who have already placed orders with her. These customers want to see their family members well dressed at Christmas and New Year celebrations. With her previous loans, Martha managed to expand her business, make some improvements to her premises and increase her customer base. She never stops working towards her dreams of prosperity. One of her dreams is for her children to own their own homes.
