A loan of $675 helped to buy rice, meat, bananas, peanuts, and other supplies.

Marjorie Monserrate's story

The members of the communal bank "Mujeres Trabajadores" (Working Women) meet every two weeks in the Rocafuerte canton. This place is known for its delicious sweets that the local residents prepare and that are known throughout the country.

In this place lives Señora Marjorie. She is 37 years old and is in a long-term relationship from which she has three children, ages 17, 13, and 11. The two older ones are in secondary school, and the youngest is in primary school. Her husband works on a shrimp farm.

She is a good homemaker who in addition to working at home and tending to the family also prepares and sells food. She prepares breakfasts and lunches that she sells in her house, where she has some tables and chairs for her customers who arrive to be served her delicious dishes. Before she only delivered the lunches, but little by little and with the help of the loans, she went about setting up a little restaurant. With this business she earns enough to pay the expenses of her children.

This loan is to buy rice, meat, bananas, peanuts, and other supplies to prepare food. She has been in the communal bank since its beginning, and she likes it because the group is very united and responsible.

Her dream is for her children to have good careers.
