Ushirika Group's story

This is the Ushirika Group, located in the Lugari district of Kenya. It is a group of 11 women and six men and is led by Beatrice, pictured on the right with her hand raised.

Beatrice is receiving an input loan for a half acre of maize and sorghum cultivation. Beatrice is a new One Acre Fund farmer and is excited for the 2013 Long Rains season. She joined One Acre Fund in order to increase her production.

Last year, Beatrice harvested three bags of maize on a half acre of land. She is excited to improve her harvest as a One Acre Fund farmer during the 2013 Long Rains season. Her biggest concern is sending her children to school. She plans on using future profits from the harvest to support her children’s studies. Additionally, she eventually would like to practice poultry farming.

For the 2013 Long Rains season, Beatrice’s group members will take input loans of a half acre each. In total, this group will receive input loans for use on 8.5 acres of land.
