Selina is a farmer in Kitale, Western Kenya. She is married and has two children, aged 20 and 17. She runs her farm with the help of one farmhand and sells her produce of milk and eggs to the local market.
Selina has requested a loan of 30,000 KES from Juhudi Kilimo to buy poultry. She plans to have a flock of one thousand birds and three dairy cows. Selina is optimistic that her farming business will continue to grow and to provide adequate income for her family. She notes, however, that feed shortages, especially during dry seasons, are a major challenge.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
