A loan of $675 helped to buy vegetables.

María Manuela's story

María is a founding member of Feria Libre Communal Bank. She has been a member for 14 years. She lives in the parish of Cumbe in Cuenca, a place of rugged geography and pretty scenery. The people there still maintain the culture and traditions of their parents, and they work in agriculture, raising animals, and in business.

María, 60, is married and has conceived nine children, eight of whom are married and live on their own. Her single son studies in a school in the town. Her husband works as a day laborer. The house they live in is their own.

María has her own place where she makes a living selling vegetables. She has done this work for five years and she works every day without a fixed schedule. At home she raises guinea pigs, chickens, and pigs. She also works in agriculture; what she harvests is for home consumption as well as to sell.

She's going to invest her new loan in buying vegetables to continue with her business.

Her goal is to continue growing in her business.
