A loan of $300 helped to buy more fashionable hair extensions.

Mary's story

Mary is 21 years old and lives in the town of Hima, in the Fortportal region of Uganda. For the past three years Mary has been working hard to manage her salon, where she does hair dressing.

To help expand her business, Mary has requested a loan of 800,000 Ugandan Shillings from BRAC Uganda. She will use the loan to buy more fashionable hair extensions. The loan will help Mary to generate greater profits, pay for her medical expenses, and buy new clothes for herself. Mary hopes that in the future she will be able to build a house for herself.

Mary is a member of BRAC's Empowerment and Livelihood for Adolescents (ELA) program. In addition to microfinance loans, the program provides both a safe place for young Ugandan women to take part in group activities, and a forum for life-skills training.
