Zainab Y.'s Group's story

Pictured here are teachers from one of the primary schools in Kabala, a town in northern Sierra Leone. This group of teachers have come to SMT, a partner of Kiva, to apply for a loan of 13,800,000 Leones for the entire team. With the help of this loan, they will be empowered to meet their immediate financial needs and at the end of each month, they can easily repay the loan using their monthly salaries. Their school’s bursar is directly responsible for doing the deductions and making the repayments on their behalf.

Lansana is the leader and featured member of this group. He is a native of Faama village in eastern Sierra Leone. He is married to a teacher and the couple have 7 children: 3 in primary school, 1 in secondary school, and 3 in college. Fifty-six year old Lansana has been a professional teacher for 32 years now. He has requested this loan in order to buy building materials like iron, corrugated zinc, sand, cement, rods, etc. so he can build a house.
