Greetings from Peru! This is the group “United for Progress”

Sonia is a member of this group. She is married, with 2 children. Her family is very important to her, and for this reason she tries, together with her husband, to give her children the very best possible. Ten years ago she started her food business. She started off selling “salchipapas”,* soft drinks and ice cream. At the present time she has a restaurant where she works from Monday to Sunday. Her best customers are people from the neighbourhood and public transport workers. Sonia would like to continue to improve her restaurant. With the loan that she has applied for, she will be able to buy new cooking utensils for her business. At some point in the future, she would like to extend the premises of her restaurant, in order to be able to serve more customers. Sonia is very grateful to the KIVA investors who make her loan possible. In the photo, she is the one in a red sweater and glasses.

* Salchipapas are a kind of kebab from the Andes.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
