A loan of $175 helped a member to buy kitchen utensils that will be used in her small hotel.

Mastula's Group's story

Mastula’s group is composed of two hardworking women. Mastula is 18 years old and lives in the town of Wobulenzi in the Luwero region of Uganda. For the past five years, Mastula has been working hard to manage her small hotel, where she cooks food.

To help expand her business, Mastula has requested a loan of 300,000 Ugandan Shillings from BRAC Uganda. The loan will be used to buy kitchen utensils that will be used in her small hotel, and will help Mastula to generate greater profits and improve on the business. Mastula hopes that in the future she will be able to buy chairs and tables.

Mastula is a member of BRAC's Empowerment and Livelihood for Adolescents (ELA) program. In addition to microfinance loans, the program provides both a safe place for young Ugandan women to take part in group activities, and a forum for life-skills training.
