A loan of $1,050 helped to pay application fees for a Master's in Economic Development.

Diana's story

Diana, 24, was born in Barranquilla, Colombia. She studied Economics at the Universidad Del Norte’s Institute for Caribbean Economic Studies thanks to her parents’ support who got loans from each of the firms they work for. Diana’s dream is to study for a Master’s degree in the United Kingdom and Kiva’s support will help her be able to pay the application fee for the TOEFL exam, for the translation of her transcripts into English, for her application fees to universities in the United Kingdom and for her visa.

Once she gets her Master’s and returns to Colombia, Diana dreams with working in the public, private or academic sector as a city and opinion leader who will foster the development of public policy and strategy to promote education of the city’s human resources and create strategies for effective jobs creation that will push development and improve the levels of quality of living in her city and in the country.

This is her story:

Notwithstanding my family’s support to reach this dream, my parents are unable to cover such high costs as these because of their limited economic situation. Even though I have my job as a teacher, the resources I generate at present are to support my family and help pay for my brother’s education.

Kiva would be of great help and encouragement for me to reach my dream of studying for a Master’s in the United Kingdom. I’m convinced that in order for people to be able to develop new ideas and learn good development practices they must learn through their own experience what other countries have done in order to develop: new opportunities and new methodologies for “doing it better;” and I know that thanks to my academic excellence and my proactivity to learn and with a great amount of effort, I can reach this dream.

For me, it would be a source of pride and satisfaction to contribute to my city’s and my country’s development and to be able through strategies and/or programs in public-private alliances to impact positively in improving the quality of life of those most vulnerable and in my city’s economic development. I’m aware that a Master’s in Development from one of the best universities in the United Kingdom would give me the necessary tools and knowledge to reach this set goal. The only guarantee I have is putting all my effort into it and giving the best I have of myself.
