A loan of $250 helped to buy coffee plants and fertilizers.

Sofia's story

Sofia and her husband have been producing coffee for a number of years. In the past they were affected by low prices for their products, however, they kept on working because they knew through experience that over time the price of coffee would rise again. Thanks to their efforts and enthusiasm, they managed to rise out of these hard times, and now they are producing a total of 10 tons of export-quality coffee with every harvest, which they deliver in full to the “Unión Regional de Huatusco” (Fair Trade coffee collective).

In addition to growing coffee, Sofia does housework and also has 2 children who still live with her and are in school. Sofia knows that if she keeps working as she has in the past 3 years she will be able to double her production of coffee, and so she needs a loan to buy fertilizers and new plants for her farms. She and her husband would like to make some improvements to their house, most of all, to their kitchen, which is in bad condition.
