A loan of $3,700 helped to purchase maize, soya, and cowpea seeds, fertilizer, and other inputs.

Ismael's story

Ismael is 20 years old and a second-year student on scholarship at the Instituto Superior Politecnica de Manica (ISPM), an agricultural training college near Chimoio in Mozambique. Since Ismael was little he grew carrots, cabbage, and fruits and always wanted to study agriculture and learn new techniques. His mother’s side of the family are all farmers, but they are encountering difficulties with aging equipment.

With the loan, Ismael will plant 6-10 hectares of maize, soya, and cowpeas on part of the university’s farm plot. He hopes to use the profits to pay for his fourth and final year of university, which is not part of the scholarship, and to also develop a small piece of land he currently owns. He wants to eventually have his own agricultural business where he can help people who do not have an education by training them in agriculture.
