A loan of $1,850 helped to purchase maize, soya, and cowpea seeds, fertilizer, and other inputs.

Nito's story

Nito is 24 years old and in his third year studying animal science at the Instituto Superior Politecnica de Manica (ISPM), an agricultural training college near Chimoio in Mozambique. His father died in war, his mother is disabled, and he has four brothers and one sister, so he must rely on himself to earn a living and help provide for his family. Most of his brothers are in the army, but Nito always dreamed of working in agriculture.

When he was unable to get into his local university, Nito started working for the local municipality, but he did not see his life improving. One day he saw an advertisement to study animal science at ISPM and applied for and was accepted to their three-year scholarship program. With the loan, Nito will plant 3-5 hectares of maize, soya and cowpeas. The loan will also pay for the mentorship of a local experienced farmer and weather insurance. He will use the profits to pay for his fourth and final year of university. Nito hopes to be a self-employed farmer and employ other people in the area to help the local economy.
