A loan of $1,100 helped to buy fique [cord made from agave leaves], wool, thread, reeds, plastic bags, etc.

Luis Alfredo's story

Luis, 50, lives in the beautiful capital of Colombia: Bogotá. He starts his fique [fiber made from agave leaves] crafts-making process very early. It consists in washing, dying, sifting, sewing and selling his main product: place mats in various designs. Luis makes his purchases in crafts centers where supplies are sold that make it possible for him to reach the best results with his pieces and his sales are daily and are cash. His 30 years’ experience is very well-known and this is why crafts stores prefer him. His goal is to double his current production because he has orders pending and needs to buy raw materials in larger amounts which is precisely what motivates him to seek a Kiva loan, his first financing with Fundación Mario Santo Domingo that he’ll use to buy fique, wool, thread, sisal rope, reeds, plastic bags, etc. With his Kiva loan he will put into practice his particular commercial strength because it’s a challenge “to attain great market drive,” as he, himself says.
