A loan of $4,100 helped a member buy sugarcane juice.

Nueva Semilla Group's story

The “Nueva Semilla” (New Seed) communal bank is in its third loan cycle with Pro Mujer as part of the Centro Focal de Juan Pablo II (community centre). Elizabeth is president of the board of directors of which there are eight members.

The communal bank members’ businesses are varied and include clothing sales, sugarcane juice sales, room rental, knit sweater sales and knit blanket sales.

This loan will benefit small businesses in different fields, including Elizabeth’s business. She became a member of Pro Mujer five years ago, when a friend invited her to join. She sells sugarcane juice (traditional Bolivian beverage), and she tell us that she learned about the business during her constant travelling to Cochabamba with her husband.

The loan she is requesting is to increase her capital to buy sugarcane from las quintas (place where it is sold) and then afterwards she’ll sell it in her sales kiosk. This kind of work helps her generate income to support her household. She is married with three children. When she is asked what she likes about Pro Mujer, she responds that she likes the loan part, as it helps a lot.
