A loan of $425 helped a member to buy ingredients for a food-making business.

Betty's Group's story

Betty leads a loan group which is made up of two hardworking women. She is 22 years old and lives in the town of Mukono in the Mukono region of Uganda. She is married and the mother of two children, both of whom attend school. For the last three years, she has earned a living by selling food. To help expand her business, she is requesting a loan for 600,000 Ugandan Shillings from BRAC Uganda. She will use the loan to buy more ingredients such as potatoes, and hopes that increased sales will help her pay for the education of her children. Her goal for the future is to buy a plot of land. Betty is a member of BRAC's Empowerment and Livelihood for Adolescents (ELA) program. In addition to microfinance loans, the program provides a safe place for young Ugandan women to take part in group activities and a forum for life-skills training.
