Agnes is 34 years old and works as a small-scale farmer. She is from Kitale town in western Kenya. Agnes is from the Abaluhya community which is well known for poultry farming and bull fighting. For the past 10 years, she has been running a mixed farm in the Kapenguria division where she produces maize, milk, eggs, and chickens that she sells at the local market. She also operates a retail shop and kiosk where she sells vegetables.
Agnes is requesting a 31,200 KES loan through Juhudi Kilimo to buy and insure a dairy cow. She believes that by acquiring a dairy cow her milk production will increase and she will be able to make enough money for her children's upkeep. In the future, Agnes plans to apply for a bigger loan to set up a posho mill.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
