Fifty year old Stephen is a farmer from Kitale Town in Western Kenya. He is married with five children, four of whom are currently attending school.
He has been in the farming business for 25 years now, and has two employees. His mixed farm produces milk and eggs, which are all sold locally. He also operates a power saw business in the same region. (Has a power saw which he hires out.)
Stephen has made a loan request of 62,400 KES (Kenyan Shillings) through Juhudi Kilimo in order to purchase and insure a dairy cow. This loan will enable him acquire a quality dairy cow that will produce enough milk for domestic consumption and sale. The proceeds from the sale of milk will help him improve the livelihood of his family. His biggest challenge in this business has been lack of enough animal feeds during the dry seasons.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
