Eliud is a 36-year-old farmer in Nyamira county, Kenya, where he lives with his wife and seven children. The children are all schooling. Eliud has been in farming for the past 16 years, producing poultry, fruits and vegetables, which he sells at the local market in his area. He works for others, as an additional source of income.
He is requesting a 55,000 KES loan. He will use the loan to purchase poultry birds, from which he will earn extra income by selling poultry products. The profits will help him improve his livelihood, expand his business, and pay school fees for his children.
High transport costs and price fluctuations are his major challenges in farming.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
