Kavira, the leader of the business group "Utulivu", is an older entrepreneur, 56 years old, widowed and the mother of 6 children and numerous grandsons and granddaughters. Her husband died after a long, chronic illness. She sells cassava flour at an agricultural depot in the commercial centre of Birere. She has been doing these types of small (revenue-generating) activities for 15 years.

She has just received her 19th loan from MFI Hekima. This new loan will be used to buy 40 bags of cassavas. She would also like to watch her children grow and increase her business.

Son mari fut décédé suite d’une longue maladie chronique. Elle est vendeuse de farine de maniocs dans un dépôt agricole au centre commercial de Birere. Il y a 15 ans révolus qu’elle exerce ces petites activités. Cependant, elle vient d’obtenir son 19eme crédit auprès de l’IMF Hekima. Ce nouveau crédit doit lui servir de s’approvisionner avec 40 sacs de maniocs. En plus, elle souhaite voir ses enfants grandir et accroitre son entreprise. La cliente remercie Hekima pour ses actions en faveur de pauvres femmes veuves exclues de banque classique.

HEKIMA is a microfinance institution headquartered in Goma, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), with branch offices in Goma and Bukavu. HEKIMA aims to contribute to the transformation of the economic, social, and spiritual lives of the economically active poor of the DRC. To this end, HEKIMA provides its clients with solidarity group loans to support income-generating activities. Despite ongoing instability and violence in its operating areas, HEKIMA continues to keep its doors open and provide credit and savings services for its over 90% female clientele.

The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee.
