A loan of $1,125 helped to buy supplies.

Georgina's story

Georgina is a part of the “Frutos del Progreso” communal bank, located in the Florida community, of the City of Santiago. She has been selling fast food for six years and works Monday thru Friday from 9:00a to 6:00p and ‘til 2:00a on the weekends. She has someone to help her with sales and preparation and she travels around to different locations by car in order to increase her sales. She buys her supplies and merchandise at supermarkets, fairs, and soft drink distributers at low cost for the most part. She will use the money from this loan to buy another car that she will keep on her land. One of Georgina’s goals is to add another items that her customers have requested, such as “mote con huesillo” (a traditional Chilean summer-time non-alcoholic drink made from wheat and peaches), crockets, and hamburgers. She would also like to set up on her land so that she can set up her equipment and expand her business. In this way she can increase her income and improve her family’s quality of life. Georgina lives with her husband, her son who is of fragile health, her daughter, and a niece. Her dreams are to create a stable business so that she doesn’t have to move around and so that she can increase her number of customers and serve them comfortably. She is very happy and grateful for the opportunity she has gotten through Fondo Esperanza because it’s allowed her to invest in her business. She also feels very comfortable with the companionship from the rest of the communal bank’s members, who have diverse interests and activities. The training she has had at the various meetings has also helped her to better manage her business. The Florida community is located southeast of metropolitan area of Santiago, the capital of Chile. Its population is very diverse, representing all socio-economic sectors (high, upper middle, middle, and lower middle). The zone has an active business life and manifests itself in the form of many business centers. This sector has experienced an explosive demographic growth in recent years.
