Ruth is aged 28. She is a farmer in Kitale county, where she lives with her husband and five children, only four of whom are schooling. She has been in farming for the past 13 years, producing maize and beans, which she sells at the local market in her area.
She is requesting a 41,600 KES (Kenyan shillings) loan from Juhudi Kilimo to buy and insure a dairy cow. She will sell the milk, which will help her get extra income and use the proceeds to uplift her living standards and educate her children. She aspires to have two dairy cows and a poultry farm in the next five years.
Competition and poor market prices are her major challenges in farming.
Ruth is glad she joined Juhudi Kilimo.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
