Kachwamba, Uganda / Food Market

A loan of $475 helped a member to buy more commodities such as sodas, sugar, splash juice, and cooking oil for resale.

Regina's Group's story

Regina's group is comprised of two hard-working women. Regina is 19 years old and lives in the town of Kachwaba in the Fortportal region of Uganda. She is single and has one child. For the past two years, Regina has been working hard to manage her retail shop, which sells flour, sugar, soap, and cooking oil.

To help expand her business, Regina has requested a loan of 500,000 Ugandan Shillings from BRAC Uganda. The loan will be used to buy more commodities such as sodas, sugar, splash juice, and cooking oil for resale and will help Regina to generate greater profits and buy food and new clothes for her family. Regina hopes that in the future she will be able to buy a plot of land and build a house.

Regina is a member of BRAC's Empowerment and Livelihood for Adolescents (ELA) program. In addition to microfinance loans, the program provides both a safe place for young Ugandan women to take part in group activities and a forum for life-skills training.
