Fighting for a better future? We need your help.

Creating a more equitable world takes a lot of time and energy, but at Kiva we’re in it for the long haul. 100% of money lent on Kiva goes to funding loans. That means we rely on donations from people like you to make this work possible. For a limited time, if you donate $35 or more, a $25 bonus will be added to your account (you’ll get an email once it’s there).

Elsie Maribel's story

ELSIE MARIBEL, 34, is married and has two children. She and her family live in Ventanas, a city in Los Rios province.

She is a member of the AVANZA community bank. Its members are farmers, all of whom live in the area around Agua Frias. Most of them grew up in the area and make their livings from farming businesses.

ELSIE MARIBEL grows maize for a living. She also raises pigs and chickens. She is applying for a loan that she will use to buy seeds, urea, chickens, chicken feed and other supplies.

The investment will allow her to buy the supplies she needs to continue her farming and poultry business. She buys and sells what she needs in Ventanas. Her greatest challenge is raising the money she needs to buy fertilizers.

For the future, she wants to grow her business and make a better life for her family. She likes to spend her spare time in her fields.
